Hi Chuck, I'm a 3day old now at WiFi Gator. I have been doing WiFi Hotspots for two years.

I first re-flashed a linksys router from DD-WRT v24-sp1 to the build that came off my Gator Server.

Later.. I explored this "open-mesh dashboard" thing. Created a node in it. Clicked on everything in it. Didn't really get it. Didn't really seem like it was for my router type.

Then I found your article on the forum on getting open-mesh dash board to work with dd-wrt. So I clicked on the link to build that firmware. Flashed that firmware in.. and did a factory reset.
OMfriggingG... I was seriously impressed. The thing auto config'd from open-mesh and the grey dot on the map turned green.

Stunned.... WOW... so so simple to deploy.

I can't believe how much work I have put into WiFi configs / backups / Restores / change outs and moves. This simplifies things SO MUCH.

Coolness... ..thanks-a-many,
-Tom

Chuck - you are THE MAN.... I struggled for ages to get a hotspot solution up for my small town - owing to high prices DSL is not an option. Your software made it a snap. I installed the operating system onto my PC , followed the steps in your quickstart guide and BOOM! , I had a hotspot up and running in no time. People - don't bother looking elsewhere. I have scoured the internet and know EVERY detail about EVERY hotspot solution out there - and no solution even comes close. Chuck DeJarnett is a Wifi GOD. And a genuinely good dude, too. Check you guys on the support forum... Lloyd Lopes RetroNet CC
Hey everyone, its my first time posting and I am about to go live with my first Wifigator system. Right off the bat I would like to thank Chuck and the whole Wifigator team for the enormous effort and astonishing achievement of bringing your system to fruition! I have been following the forum for a few months now, watching the awesome progress and craving enough free time to get my feet wet here as well. I could tell immediately that the Wifigator community was one of sincere, helpful, talented, generous people that I would be lucky to make the acquaintance of. If it was not for the fantastic resource this forum and its users have created, I would have, in no way, been so successful in building a Wifi Hotspot. So thanks again for all the hard work, dedication and documentation presented here.

I have installed one AP and four repeaters in an RV park near (removed), New Jersey. All in all the install was easy and straight forward. I installed a circuit breaker at each repeater location and ran romax to electrical outlets inside the weatherproof boxes that house the routers. The AP is a similar setup on the roof of the park's office building with a Cat5e cable running to their existing LAN.

Lots of Thanks to everyone again and keep of the great work!
Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a heart beat!!!
The (removed) Market Wireless will be open for business this weekend!!
Many thanx to Chuck, Steve and Aaron for their awesome assistance in getting this up and running...
I am one happy camper tonight!!

Hi, Great work guys, I have just connected to the test SSID and done a credit card transaction and purchased some time on my AP... !! Very cool guys great work - you are a legend!

OMG, it's Awesome. Works perfectly, I love the part where it takes the newly created username and password and inserts it into the login page. 2.1.0 is TOO SWEET!!

Thanks so very much!!

I just got hooked up with WifiGator coming out of a sputnik install which i can now say was CRAP! but it did alow us to have custom ads and links on the login page. So this was a problem as we like to sell the option for business to have there site be free on our hotspot network.

(We have a solution! The answer is on the forum)

Well done! I am going to add that to my page right away!
Thanks! This is awesome.
first of all:

GEEZ! u guys ROCK!

this is by far the best forum i´ve read in quite a while. the attitude, the depth of expertise and of course the fanatic drive to improve to create a win-win situation for all. very well done indeed!

Wow, I did it and it seems too easy...

Thanks for making it all work so smoothly for those of us who don't know linux yet.

I don't know where else to do this, so here goes...

This is a big SHOUT OUT to all you guys, especially Chuck of course, but to everyone who has made this experience as painless as possible.

Yeah, the great thing about Chuck is that he not only sees the $'s in his account, but he sees the $'s in a person too. Even if you don't have the capital to invest right away (and some people truly are in that position), he can still see the potential in people and values them just as much.

Basically, he deals in people and thoughts, as much as he deals in money.

=====
Yes he does and he saw it in me as well. I did not donate to the cause right away, but I did later after I was taught the wisdom from the great and powerful Chuck.

You need to create a donation link in a another thread and then lock it down. We need to have more options to keep this project going.

My system rocks completely and is literally worth 100K a year to me. These are the tools to implement your solutions. Now your job is only to sell sell sell. That's it.

This stuff is the bee's knees right here; I compared this to an old Nomadix server that we used to use, doesn't even come close.

If it hasn't been said already, and you can put this where ever it's needed, the bandwidth options work perfect!! This is what I needed all along and it works exactly as advertised. Bought some bandwidth plans and tested it out myself, right on the dot for upload and download speeds.
Warning: nostalgia forthcoming, avert thine eyes!

After reading and re-reading through this forum as much as I have, it is amazing how far this software has come over the past few months. When I first got into this, Chillidog was all I could really find, and I even had to hunt high and low for that. I got a crude install of it working on Ubuntu, but there were a great deal of kinks to iron out.

About that time, Chuck announced on the DD-WRT forum of a rolled up, all in one DVD called the Debian Enchilada. Version 0.5.9 as I recall, based on Debian Etch. It had to be installed on a system with one IDE DVD drive and one IDE HDD; no more, no less. Anything else disconnected for the installation. I downloaded a copy and signed up here, but never did get it working. The next day, 0.6.0 based on Kubuntu 7.04 came out and I grabbed that. Never could get it to install GRUB; suspect that it was SATA issues, but shortly after, 0.6.5 came out and that was solved.

Then, 1.0.0, 1.0.5 and 1.0.8 came out; I grabbed copies of those too, but the big hit was when 2.0.8 and subsequently 2.1.0 came out. So much more stuff came rolled up with each release. First, the Chillidog and the DD-WRT mod kit, then VoIP, followed up by the CRM software, osCommerce and most recently, the new firmwares, OpenVZ and the prepaid ticket system. Forgive me if I left something out (I'm sure that I did), but it's a lot to remember all at once. Basically, it is the real deal all rolled into one DVD; definitely worth the donations and then some besides.

Now that it's pretty much finished per Chuck's words, it's like a proverbial roller coaster ride coming in for a stop. I'm just glad I could be a part in it; I like to think I contributed a little something to the whole along the way. Thanks to all!

There we go! I got it working now. I started reading the code and found that it could not create the directory.

Thanks for the quick responce Chuck. It is working fine now!!!

" do you smell something ... yah thats it ... It smells like... MONEY!!!"

Keep up the good work guys !!!

Ah Man....Chuck and his team does it again. Great Stuff!!!

Chuck D and Loren. great work

I have it working, and the PDF tickets are great.
The tickets are so stylish whit a great logo:)
Shit this software have the power to knock every wifi company to hell:)

With all the questions being posted just thought I would share a little success story.

I stumbled into this forum after finding chillidog on the dd-wrt forum.
Downloaded the 0.6.5 version (I think was the first version i got), installed it quickly and easly. While I was still testing it and branding it people started logging-on to it. Upgraded, several times. Now am running 2.1.0, had a slight hold-up figuring out which firmware to flash router with. I confused myself reading too many post in a random order . But after flashing with the porper firmware and putting in my settings every thing runs perfectly.

I live just on the edge of the U.K. campus and several students rent rooms and apartments on this and neighboring streets. We also have lots of foot traffic between the campus and Rupp Arena. So this is a fairly good spot to set-up a hotspot.

Without advertising of any kind I know have about a dozen or so regular customers and a good amount of "walk-ins", and I'm still in the testing phase. Right now I'm just helping PayPal get richer with my 5 cents for 30 min. access package.

People realy just can't wait to get on.

I get so damn excited every time something goes right with this stuff...

I have the process down to a point where I should be able to document it and repeat it as many times as I want consistently. My Asus WL-520gU is set up as an AutoAP Repeater and works properly with Chilli.

Anyway, this is just another of those silly celebration posts. Now to finish getting a couple private networks on the router and document the steps as I flash router #2.

Hi!

first I wan't to say how brilliant this system is! I have played it for couple of days now and i like it very much. I got the system up and running quite easily

Thought I would check out how our little chilidog has been doing. From the looks of the screenshots it looks great. It looks more end user friendly now. Still running 1.1.1 here. Have it installed on a laptop that has not been shut down in over a year. 1.1.1 is a little ugly and confusing to the end user so I may have to upgrade one of these days. 50 bucks is a little steep for me now however, it's been a long hard winter with no hotspot customers. Summer is almost here though. Happy to see that chilidog is alive and well though. Good job guys.

Have only been messing around with this stuff for less than a day and I'm ready to go live very soon.

Chuck for President :-)

Hello to everyone here,

weve been quite busy the last few months doing some research and evaluation work on a hotspot solution which meets our requirements to be useable for a wifi project here in Germany.

We tried almost every of the above mentioned solutions and meanwhile spend loads of money and even more time just to figure out that none of those solutions fitted our needs...

With Sputnik the localization to the German market would have been a pain in the a... Eventually only possible when we buy the licenses and host everything inhouse. I dont feel comfortable spending $2.000+ for a software which needs endless hours of modification by the customer...

Next candidate on our list: hotspotsystem.com - I personally really like the admin frontend and the node administration options they provide. I had a couple of phone calls with the guys from hotspotsystem.com - Everybody was quite friendly and helpful to answear my questions. A special feature I requested was implemented within four or five days...
The main problem here: I dont mind the revenue sharing model they offer, it works good if you just operate your own hotspot. When you operate a larger amount of nodes with a different customer at each location the administrative workload for billing and usage tracking is impossible to handle with this kind of profit sharing.

With the knowledge we collected meanwhile, we more or less already decided to setup an open source based solution ourself.
For that reason I followed the chillispot/phpmyprepaid thread at the ddwrt forum for quite a while. And now the solution seems to be there: Debian Enchilada

Chuck, just reading the feature list and the forum posts here, it looks like you did a damn good job. It would be a pleasure for me to support the project as good as possible. This project has an incredible potential.

Keep on with the good work, Ill provide my feedback asap., once everything is up and running.

Regards, Dirk

This is software is awesome, personally I bought tile $50 version, then the $200 version, and I paid $300 for a local developer to add on a feature for me.(Which I donated back to the project). And I still feel guilty using this software because I think it is worth much more then I have paid. I have also decided that once this part of my business gets off the ground, I will be making a donation based on every system I deploy for HotSpot style setups. Before finding this software, I had tried to setup something to meet my needs on my own, and it is not easy. So pay the $50 bucks it is worth thousands.

my 2 cents

Anyway, thanks for all the help, love what you've done here! I'd say Wifi-Gator Enchilada is the next big killer app in the wifi world; I'm glad I got in on it.

That's incredible, Chuck.

And to think, a little over a month ago I just stumbled onto this site after looking for a way to use dd-wrt to create a wireless bridge with a couple linksys routers.

As soon as I read what you were doing here, I knew instantly that this would be my method to build my business very quickly. I've pretty much set aside all other Internet Marketing stuff, Websites, and Programming to focus on this full time. For some reason this just clicked for me and I see it as being extremely profitable. The biggest part of it for me is that I live in a town with a little over 5,000 people in it. Yeah, Google's giving free wifi to major cities like San Fransisco or whatever, but who's taking care of the small towns? Well, I can, of course! I've also considered going to the City and seeing if they are interested in sponsoring free wifi. I think there is much more money to be made by keeping it private, but I'm not sure. If the city is willing to part with $2,000 - $3,000 per month then it just may be worth it after all.

Not only did the wifi catch my interest, but the ability to easily build out servers for use as a phone network? I expect to be able to quit my programming job in the next year and work as a consultant, installing VOIP networks for companies. I mean, it's just so easy to do that it's ridiculous. I used to work for Sprint, and each of their Nortel PBX systems cost well over $100K. Mind you, they don't have just one either. Can you imagine telling a small to mid size company that you can get rid of all their proprietary hardware and get them running on a standard pc with parts that are inexpensive to replace for even $5,000? When they're used to spending $10K or more on the equipment and high dollars on service calls, then they'll jump all over it.

I mean, we're really only scratching the surface here. Chuck's going crazy adding more and more to it, but I don't think we'll get to a point where it's overblown. It seems to me like we're reaching a good place with the server and that we won't keep adding quantity much longer, and focus on quality. We've already got an excellent base system here, and it's only getting better.

Thanks Chuck, Loren, and whoever helped get this stuff off the ground. Although I'm confident that I could get to the same place having never met you guys, I'm branching into some areas that I never would have touched without your help. Now I can jump on these things now and focus on building websites and stuff like that later. You guys are really helping me get out to a great start with this stuff and I know that it will make me very successful in the coming months.

Thanks.
I thought maybe you guys would like this. A little more time and this would have turned into a WiFi Gator site in Iraq; but turned out to be a temporary stay for me in . I could have been selling WiFi to the Brits stationed there.

I was able to get my fellow Pilots to fly down spare equipment in a CH-47D helicopter. It took alittle ingenuity to get the Satellite up and going, but well worth it in the end. Managed to keep us all in touch with the family.

I'd like to think Macgyver would be proud.

" I have gotta say that I have been in the Wi-Fi business for over five years now and have worked with numerous equipment vendors and software companies. What Loren and chuck have done in a few short months would have taken these other slow moving lumbering companies well over a year to two years to come up with when asked for better solutions.

Chuck and Loren are on top of the needs of us all and they know what is not being provided by these other guys. I am floored, absolutely FLOORED by their innovations and their willingness to get them done in a quick and timely manner.

I have always told my potential customers that my only local completion is AT&T but because they are so big and so slow to act on the ever changing needs of today’s digital generation they are not much competition at all. I think that it is the same for the Wi-Fi Gator team. They have no real competition, they have raised the bar and the other guys are still too slow and lackadaisical to reach it yet.

Kudos to you both!! "

Thank you for your input gentlemen. you know I have the highest regard for the abilities of the people on this forum. I managed a 60 location hotspot network for 6 years over a 1200 sq K area and in that time used 3 different hotspot softwares, none of which come anywhere even remotely close to the performance of WiFi Gator.

" You realize , of course , that you are single handedly destroying the very business models wireless providers rely on , and turning the wireless industry on its head while you're at it.

You better start finding a high security bunker soon...they are going to start chasing you with sniper rifles...

I wish I could do more to help....If you think of some low level work that needs to be done , like documentation or something...let me know...

Rock on....! "

.::==============================================================::.

" Just a quick message to say Hello to all.
I just got my first hot spot up and running thanks to chuck for the support and help along the way.

I must say that the DVD is great, and the firmware for the routers are fantastic, This is first time I have used Linux and I am very impressed.

I am sure I will have lots of questions along the way, but for now I am happy to play and test as many functions as possible.

I have been in IT support and admin for 10+ years and never came across a forum so informative. "
.::==============================================================::.

" Hey there Chuck, your support and enthusiasm towards this project is going to make a lot of money for a lot of us. This system is way ahead of what most people will ever need. Well done Chuck and Co, I love your work......here is a bonus payment, not because i have lots of money (i wish) but because in my 20 years of software ownership, this is the best value i have ever seen, let alone owned....AWESOME ! "

.::==============================================================::.

Hi loren,
gotta say ... all this wouldn't happen unless people like you and Chuck allowed us to access source code...
i think alot of us would agree you guys derserve the pat on the back.. If what happens, from playing with code helps to make your product more useful/saleable then i can only think of it as ...our token of gratitude!! ...thats about my view on it!!
